Shadow Wall, 2023

Seal a space completely, and it becomes dark inside.

Then, break the continuum on one side, allowing just enough light to pass through.

This process can produce an image, whether it’s through a magic lantern, a camera obscura, or a pinhole camera. I find this phenomenon fascinating, which is why I have a keen interest in photography.

Shadow Wall is my equilibria state of mind. The current one.

I came to this project through researching the therapeutic aspects of photography. The goal was to create the space that provides canvas for the subconscious but establishing context by sharing the scene between individuals. In Shadow Wal,l the entire room becomes an apparatus that fulfils the camera’s role: to listen and record.

Who cares…!  That’s who we pose for in front of a camera; whoever cares to look at our photo at a different time, maybe in a different space. We seek acceptance and care from others, hoping to find our place in a social hierarchy. Personal identity is negotiated, therefore in an empty space, alone, we are no more than biological machines with hopes and dreams. Shadow Wall provides a point of reference for each individual, offering (or refusing) a sense of belonging.
