I am a London based music photographer. My work is focused around women in music and female collectivity, drawing on the influence of female music photographers and those who have paved the way for a better representation of women in the music industry.

Inspired by the pioneer of Riot Grrrl, Kathleen Hanna, and her explanation that a teenage girl’s bedroom is often a place where creativity happens, Another Female Fronted Band is a statement on how teenage girls should be growing up with an abundance of girls in bands to look up to.

After photographing girl bands in a variety of contexts, I have collated and collaged the images onto a bedroom wall, as a declaration of a teenage girl’s bedroom in a re-imagined world, where women are equally represented in the music industry. Alongside my images of these female musicians, I put out a public call for authentic photos of real girls in their teenage bedrooms to collage into the space.

The project it named after Louise Wener, lead singer of 90s band Sleeper, after she retaliated against the press by turning up to a photoshoot wearing a T-shirt saying, ‘Another Female Fronted Band’, protesting the fact that her male bandmates and peers were asked serious music questions in interviews, and her asked trivial, degrading and meaningless questions. The statement is still relevant in music today, where women still find themselves put in a box and defined by their gender.
