Perception is a main title for two inter-related projects.
Inside Out explores chronic illness, mental health and hidden disabilities in women aged 18-30. My intention was to interpret what can’t be seen by the naked eye and make it visible, providing a voice to represent their illness and disability, alongside my own experience, through a set of directed portraits. The project relates to my own issues with chronic pain, anxiety, depression and spinal deformities. Accepting myself for who I am, I collaborate with the participating women to advocate greater acceptance by society and to make their issues visible. In today’s society young people with chronic illness, disabilities, which are often hidden, are frequently dismissed by medical professionals, being told ‘you're too young to feel like this’ or ‘it’s all in your mind’.
Being Female explores female body, through a framework of female gender, female gaze and feminism, de-objectifying women, creating a narrative around femininity, and affirming the importance of female gaze in photography.
