I am a mixed media artist born in Guernsey, raised in California, currently working in London. Through the framework of phenomenology, I explore themes of time and family.
Phenomenology is the study of structures of consciousness as experienced from the first-person point of view. The central structure of an experience is its intentionality, being directed toward something, as it is an experience of, or about some object.
This project conceptualises the feeling of the shift between how we present ourselves to the world, versus who we are when alone and dealing with our own troubles. After facing an encounter with a cancer diagnosis in the family, I finally appreciated how people could be going through something traumatic but appear unaffected. For the first time, I understood that you can switch head spaces between being fine in front of others, and feeling the weight of the situation once alone. Rather than focusing on these separately, I specifically focus on a visual representation of the line between these two states.
This work layers moving image and portraits of candid moments with structuring thoughts. The motivation for this is to push myself creatively in conveying a phenomenology of subjective experience that perhaps others can relate to. I think these feelings are universal on a certain level, but are hard to process.
