Socket Magazine
Volume 4
The metropolis can offer a warm embrace to those seeking to start a career in the arts through making connections and becoming their true self. But it can also be overwhelming at times with an abundance of hurdles to overcome.
Against this backdrop, our students operate with persistence and address the issues that affect them most; London’s more unfriendly aspects are recorded with the camera’s unapologetic lens and re-imagined as a post-apocalyptic city, minutes, or centuries apart. They pay tribute to past experiences and traditions and investigate how these inform our existence in the here and now. A bird’s eye view reminds us of where we stand in the universe and by looking out at the sea we are grounded by the nature’s grandiosity and healing powers. Using photography, the self is dismantled and reconstructed, trauma and established patriarchal views in society addressed, as a means of personal discovery and serious inquiry.
The fourth edition of Socket Magazine produced by our Year 2 students, aptly reflects the diversity of practice we celebrate in our BA Photography course at the School of Art, Architecture and Design, London Metropolitan University.
