Socket Magazine

Volume 5

Socket Magazine is celebrating its fifth year! In recognition of this milestone, we have taken a slightly different approach on the cover, enlarging the photograph for greater impact; despite the humour and the pause from the daily routine of the subject, the photograph is inviting us to imagine what happens beyond the frame.

What happens is Life! Vernacular observations remind us of the beauty in the mundane and passing moments, whilst careful considerations focus our attention on the importance of a healthy natural environment. Small details are celebrated in the shadows and where the city’s buildings meet the sky. Photography is used as a tool to make connections and meet new people in the plethora of London’s markets and streets, and their energy is encapsulated through painting interventions on the photographic paper. We cross the Atlantic Ocean to follow the inspiring journey of a stripper in New York, submerge into London’s queer club culture and discover photography’s healing powers.

The volume five of Socket Magazine produced by our Year 2 students, beautifully reflects the diversity of practice we celebrate in our BA Photography course at the School of Art, Architecture and Design, London Metropolitan University.
