Andrea Irmeni & Jamie - Rose Monk
Take Up Space, 2023
In order to hold up a satirical mirror to society, my partner, performer and actor, Jamie-Rose Monk and I wanted to address what she believes about herself and what people have said to her in a comedic and playful way.
Jamie states, ‘’As a woman and, more specifically, a fat woman, I use my sense of humour like armour. It has helped to keep me safe, diffuse conflicts and, most importantly - get my point of view across. Taking up space is what I need to remember daily, as I often feel like I am not allowed to.’’
When creating this series of photographs, we thought about a quote from Peter Ustinov, “Comedy is simply a funny way of being serious.”
In this work, we wanted to flip seemingly negative thoughts from the self and words from others and see them for what they really are … silly.
